PCBs are fabricated using wet chemistry and mechanical techniques. Some of the chemical baths contain metallic salts and organic materials. These chemicals, if left on the surface, could affect the functionality of the PCBs by reducing electrical insulation resistance and promote corrosion or ECM on the conductor pattern.This condition is usually associated with low operating voltage (10 volts or less) and requires three components: moisture, metallic contaminants, and voltage. The ionic cleanliness test measures the conductivity of a de-ionized water and alcohol solution used to wash the PCB. Commercial equipment is available to perform ionic cleanliness testing. The organic cleanliness test uses an organic solvent wash (e.g., acetonitrile) to remove loose organics from the surface of the PCB. This wash solution is collected on a glass plate and the solvent is allowed to evaporate. Any organic contamination in the wash solution leaves a cloudy residue on the glass that can be subsequently analyzed for composition.These two tests are mutually exclusive in that the organic test cannot detect ionic contamination and vice-versa. Note that when a solder mask is required on PCBs, an additional cleanliness test is performed on the uncoated PCBs before coating. 51.11.1.9 Solderability Inspection. Solderability inspection measures the ability of the attachment points to be wetted by solder in the areas for the joining of components to the PCB. Three terms are used to describe acceptability of solderability:

Wetting The formation of a relatively uniform, smooth, unbroken, and adherent film of solder to a basis material, wetting is the preferred and acceptable condition. De-wetting This condition results when molten solder has coated the attachment surface and recessed, leaving irregularly shaped mounds of solder separated by areas covered with a thin film of solder that fully covers the basis metal. De-wetting is not acceptable for attachment points but is allowed on ground or voltage planes for Class 1 and 2 products. Non-wetting This nonconforming condition is the partial adherence of molten solder to a surface that it has contacted, leaving some of the basis metal exposed.

The following diagram shows how these drivers are used to drive relay coils. Figure 6.39 shows three relays being driven by the outputs of three drivers from the ULN2003A IC. One end of the relay coil is connected to the output of the driver and the other end is connected to the ve supply voltage. The value of this voltage will depend upon the relay coil voltage ratings. The diode common point is also connected to the ve supply voltage. The inputs to the ULN2003A IC is TTL voltages, say the output of the port pins of the AVR, for example. With this arrangement, the port signals could be used to control each of the relays. The relay terminals labeled NC (Normally Closed), common, and NO (Normally Open) could be used to switch whatever voltage that may need to be switched. Typically, the relay terminals are used to switch the main supply (220 V AC or 115 V AC as may be the case) to the required load (a heater or a lamp, etc.), but, of course, it may be used to switch any voltage (AC or DC) as long as the relay contact can handle the voltage and the current.
