or an application to recognize speech, it needs to know which words and phrases to expect. Building grammar involves compiling lists of predicted user responses to specific prompts. Creating grammar doesn t necessarily have to be the very first step in creating an IVR application, but it certainly should be done early in the development process. Grammar is stored in a W3C-compliant format called Speech Recognition Grammar Specification (SRGS), specifically in an XML format known as Grammar XML (GRXML). The uncompiled format is stored with a .grxml file extension, and the compiled format is stored with a .cfg file extension. When speech from grammar is recognized, it produces the results in an XML format called Semantic Markup Language (SML). When developing an IVR application, building grammar is the most time-consuming piece. It will take more time than writing the application itself. Fortunately, Speech Server offers a couple GUI tools to ease the process and save you some time: the Conversational Grammar Builder and the Grammar Editor. Both tools support keyword grammar, but only the Grammar Builder supports conversational grammar. Speech Server also provides several other utilities to aid in grammar building, including the Semantic Script Builder, Lexicon Editor, and Pronunciation Editor. In this chapter, you ll learn how to use each of these tools, as well as how to build grammar manually, by writing your own GRXML, and dynamically, based on existing data in a database.

language s functionality is supplied by the standard library. 4 This bit of design genius means that C can be easily implemented on a new platform by creating a minimal compiler and using that to compile the standard library to produce something sufficient for application development. The separation between the core language and the library also means there can be several implementations. That fact inhibited the adoption of C for a while, because each compiler maker shipped a C standard library that differed from their competitors , meaning a complex project needed tweaking (or major rework) in order to be used with a different compiler. In the case of Linux, several small library implementations exist, with uClibc being the most common. uClibc is smaller because it was written with size in mind and doesn t have the platform support of glibc; it s also missing some other features. Most of what s been removed has no effect on an embedded system. Later in the book, I cover the finer points of uClibc as well as some of the other small libc implementations.

Some professional graphic artists and motion picture animators use even greater color depth: 16 or more bits per color channel. Normal computer monitors can t display this many colors some video cards can display 10 bits per channel on a CRT monitor, but typical LCD monitors only manage 6 bits per channel. But extreme color precision can offer more control to the artist who must produce exactly the right color on professional output equipment. High-end digital cameras and some scanners can also produce images with 16 bits per channel, though you ll never see the difference on an ordinary computer display. GIMP 2.4 doesn t support these high color depths it uses 32 bits per pixel internally but support for higher color depths is in the works for future versions.
